Iveco 5.4 – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) Unit: Faulty cylinder nozzle 4 / Cylinder 4 injector solenoid valve

The engine control unit has detected an electrical anomaly with the fuel injector on cylinder 4, such as a short to battery, short to earth, or an open circuit. The engine will likely run rough (dropping to 2 or 3 cylinders) and the control unit will force a power reduction (limp mode).

   Inspect the wiring harness between the cylinder 4 injector and the EDC control unit connector.

   Test the continuity and check for shorts on the specific pins for cylinder 4 (e.g., EDC connector pins A24 to A41, depending on exact engine model).

   Ensure the plug at the injector is seated correctly and free of oil, moisture, or corrosion.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Injector

   Remove the engine cover or valve cover as necessary to access the fuel injectors.

   Inspect and Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the harness, repair the damaged wires or replace the injector harness.

   Replace the Injector

   If the wiring tests perfectly fine, the solenoid inside the cylinder 4 injector has failed. Remove the high-pressure fuel line, unbolt the injector hold-down clamp, and extract the faulty injector.

   Install New Seals

   Clean the injector bore and install a new copper crush washer and rubber dust seal before installing the new injector.

   Reassembly

   Torque the injector clamp and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

   Clear Fault Memory

   Reconnect the battery. Clear the failure memory using an Iveco diagnostic tool or via the Blink Code button procedure (keep the Blink Code key pressed for 4 to 8 seconds while the key-switch is inserted).

   Coding

   Depending on the engine (especially Common Rail models), program the new injector's calibration code into the EDC using a diagnostic scanner.
