Kubota E:9120 – Engine ECU: Fuel filter water warning

The primary fuel filter's water separator bowl is full of water, and water may be entering the fuel filter element. If the water separator is not drained immediately after this alarm appears, the engine may suffer serious damage and the cleaning efficiency of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) will be severely reduced.

   Visually inspect the primary fuel filter's clear sediment bowl for visible water accumulation or debris.

   If the bowl is empty but the code persists, inspect the water sensor on the fuel filter housing for poor electrical connections, loose wires, or corrosion.

   Inspect the main fuel tank for heavy water contamination, which would require flushing the tank.

   Stop the Machine

   Immediately stop the engine and lower the lift arms to the ground. Continuing to run the machine can push water into the high-pressure injection pump and injectors.

   Locate the Water Separator

   Find the primary fuel filter/water separator assembly.

   Drain the Water

   Place a catch pan under the filter. Open the shutoff cock (evacuator valve) or remove the drain bolt at the bottom of the water separator bowl. Allow the fluid to drain until all the water is expelled and only clean diesel fuel flows out. Close the shutoff cock or securely reattach the drain bolt.

   Test the Machine

   Turn the key on and start the engine. If the E:9120 code clears, the issue is resolved.

   Replace Filters

   If the code remains, or if the machine suffers from power loss under load, replace both the primary fuel/water separator element and the secondary engine-mounted fuel filter. Clean the inside of the clear separator bowl thoroughly before installing the new filter.

   Address Sensor/Wiring

   If the code still will not clear after draining and filter replacement, the water sensor has likely failed or there is a short in the harness. Replace the sensor and clear the codes.
