New Holland 3681 – Engine ECU (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control module): Engine Protection Due To Blow-By

Fehlerbeschreibung

This code indicates that the engine's crankcase pressure (blow-by) has exceeded the maximum allowable safety threshold. When this critical pressure limit is breached, the system triggers an engine protection strategy, usually resulting in a severe engine derate (loss of power) or an automatic engine shutdown. This is done to prevent catastrophic internal engine damage or the blowing out of engine seals.

Ursache prüfen

  1. Check engine oil level: Overfilled engine oil can significantly increase crankcase pressure. Verify the oil is at the correct level on the dipstick.

  2. Inspect the blow-by / crankcase breather filter: A clogged or frozen blow-by filter is the most common culprit for this code. If the filter cannot vent pressure, it builds up in the crankcase and triggers the sensor.

  3. Test the crankcase pressure sensor and wiring: Inspect the sensor harness for chafing, corrosion, or short circuits that could be sending a false 'high pressure' reading to the EDC.

  4. Measure actual crankcase pressure: Use a manual manometer to test the actual blow-by pressure. If the pressure is normal, the sensor or wiring is faulty.

  5. Mechanical engine inspection: If the filter is clean and the sensor is accurate, the engine has excessive mechanical blow-by. Check for worn piston rings, scored cylinder liners, a blown head gasket, or failed turbocharger seals.

Reparaturschritte

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely.

  2. Locate the filter

Locate the crankcase breather/blow-by filter housing. Depending on the engine model, this is typically mounted on top of the valve cover or on the side of the engine block.

  3. Disconnect hoses

Loosen the clamps and disconnect the breather hoses attached to the filter housing. Inspect the hoses for heavy oil sludge or blockages and clean them out if necessary.

  4. Open the housing

Unbolt or unclip the filter housing cover.

  5. Remove the filter

Pull out the old blow-by filter element and discard it.

  6. Clean housing

Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean, lint-free rag to remove residual oil and carbon buildup.

  7. Install new filter

Insert the new blow-by filter element. Ensure that any supplied O-rings or gaskets are properly seated to prevent vacuum/oil leaks.

  8. Reassembly

Reinstall the housing cover and torque the fasteners to OEM specifications. Reconnect and clamp the breather hoses securely.

  9. Clear codes and test

Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH E.A.S.Y. system) to the diagnostic port, clear fault code 3681, and run the engine under load to verify that crankcase pressure remains within normal limits.
